STANDARD - Core Concepts

Learn about gambling as an addiction as well as the Three Core Concepts. (see below)

STANDARD - Accessing Information

Know where to get additional information on gambling. (see categories on right)

STANDARD - Self-Management

Know how to reduce your risk of developing a gambling problem.

STANDARD - Analyzing Influences

Pay attention to advertising in the media (T.V., radio, Internet), billboards, team/event sponsorships, etc. Monitor newspapers/Internet media sports and entertainment news. Also, be aware of presence or absence of school gambling policies.

STANDARD - Interpersonal Communication

Know how to talk to someone whose gambling concerns you. (see “What Do You Say in the Face of Problem Gambling?” in CHoices and Guidelines)

STANDARD - Goal Setting

Create a plan to reduce risk when engaging in activities such as fundraisers/raffles or playing poker games with friends.

STANDARD - Decision Making

Make a decision involving gambling by identifying options and possible consequences. Focus on the Three Core Concepts.

2.It’s not O.K. to participate in illegal or underage gambling.

3.If you choose to gamble, it’s important to know how to reduce the risk of developing gambling problems.

STANDARD - Advocacy

Know how to access help via helpline and treatment options. Start a program similar to the GAMES Program or Taking Charge Program (see Two Model Programs on right) to increase capacity and/or advocate for choosing not to gamble and/or reduce risk if you do gamble.
